Quality of journalism paper a success at the National Union of Journalists’ Delegates Meeting

The whole of Order paper 14 on the quality of journalism was carried at the NUJ Delegate Meeting 2011 in Southport. After John Lister introduced the paper, it went straight into motion 116 which was proposed by the Oxford and District branch. The speaker spoke of how “quality journalism needs to be defended”. Student delegate Sam Butler speaks on Wikileaks motion

Student delegate Sam Butler spoke on order paper 13 motion 112 on Wikileaks. Sam mentioned that a lack of scrutiny of these websites could put “lives, careers and liberty” at risk. Sam ended by quoting Gargi Patel “We have rights, but also responsibilities” and said that he “couldn’t agree more.” The motion was carried.

Dan Richardson was voted for by fellow students for the position and is expected to be speaking in front of the delegates later today. Delegate Meeting will not be held annually

The National Union of Journalists Delegate Meetings are to be held every 18 months despite a motion from London Central branch to change it back to annual meetings.
