NUJ’s first woman General Secretary speaks about role

The new General Secretary, Michelle.

Michelle Stanistreet

Michelle Stanistreet is the first woman to take the position of National Union of Journalists General Secretary, as well as the first person to move from Deputy Secretary to General.

Michelle was still in shock the day after she found out she had got the position and said: “It wasn’t how I expected yesterday to go, it’s all really surprising.”

After the election deadlines closed Michelle was competing with one other candidate, Chris Youett, who withdrew from the election in support of her.

Michelle said the position is a, “huge honour” and that she has some very, “big shoes to fill” when the current General Secretary, Jeremy Dear, leaves at the beginning of July.

Safe guard

Speaking about the difficult times the Union has gone through in the last 10 years Michelle said: “Part of my role as General Secretary will be to carry on the work we have done to safe guard the union’s future.

“Keeping our union as an independent, thriving robust union is fundamental. I don’t want to see us swallowed up by one of the big general unions, that would be a terrible move for us.”

In a speech on the first day of the NUJ Delegate Meeting 2011, Jeremy Dear spoke about his ten years with the union.
